Hydrotherapy Services

Hydrotherapy is a form of therapy used to treat various conditions and involves an individual undertaking different types of exercises in a pool of water.

At Total Health Physio, we offer Hydrotherapy guided by either a Physiotherapist or an Exercise Physiologist, depending on your preference. The purpose of Hydrotherapy based rehabilitation is to enjoy exercise, relieve pain and improve one’s physical health (range of motion, metabolism, heart rate etc).

Hydrotherapy takes place in pools around Melbourne, heated between 33 to 36 degrees celsius, however, hydrotherapy can take place at local beaches and swimming spots too, as sometimes our client’s goals relate to these areas.

With Trust, Compassion & Care we help adults (over 18) with a disability undertake safe, enjoyable hydrotherapy. Rain, hail or shine!

How Hydrotherapy Works at Total Health Physio

Please contact us to make an inquiry. We will conduct a questionnaire to ensure that the client is safe to undertake hydrotherapy, and there are no conditions/medications that are contraindications to hydrotherapy.

One of our lovely Physiotherapists or Occupational Therapists will then come to the client’s home to perform a functional assessment and to work out a program that would be beneficial for you in the water.

Our Physiotherapist or Exercise Physiologist will then book a follow-up appointment and at the pool of the client’s choice which has hydrotherapy facilities. We will contact them to organise scheduling and payment of the facilities.

During our first pool session, we will evaluate the client’s performance in the water, learn more about their goals and develop a wonderful exercise plan that we can continue to build on together!

What Types of Exercises Can We Do?

Hydrotherapy is great because we can tolerate more movement. Being submerged in water, body weight can be reduced by upto 90%.

Exercises selection is tailored towards the individual, though some of the fun movements we might do are:

  • Walking in the water, reactive side-stepping
  • Thoracic rotation exercises
  • Using kickboards for thoracic extension
  • Single leg balance work
  • Practicing swimming techniques
  • Tricep extensions using a elastic band between the ankle and hand

Hydrotherapy FAQ

  • Does Total Health Physio offer group hydrotherapy classes?

In theory, this is something we can provide, such as two NDIS participants attending the pool with two of our clinicians.

This, however, is very rare, most of our services are one to one.

  • Can my consented family or carers attend hydrotherapy with me?

Of course! The more the merrier.

Please note that if your family or carers want to swim themselves, our clinicians cannot support them as we are supporting our client.

  • How do I get to the pool?

Total Health Physio does not offer a transport service.

The participant will need to organise their own transport to and from the pool. This could be from family, public transport or a taxi, for example.

  • I'd like both hydrotherapy and home-based therapy. How does this work with Total Health?

Both of these services work hand-in-hand and can be totally customised to your liking!

For example, you may want to do Physiotherapy weekly, Hydrotherapy fortnightly and Exercise Physiology monthly.

The pricing for our services is the same whether at home or at the pool. Please contact us for pricing.

After an initial assessment, we will produce a formalised service agreement so you have control over the frequency and funding of hydrotherapy.
